More History on DrummingThe Shamanic Journey is a technique which facilitates a visionary experience into expanded awareness. This activates our imagination and creativity, and allows us to bypass linear,familar and rational thinking. In this state of expanded awareness we can find new insights, perspectives, and ways to resolve problems. What is Shamanism? Shamanism is the oldest way in which humanity has sought connection with Creation. The origins of shamanism go back at least 40,000 – 50,000 years to Stone age times. All of us have evolved from shamanic cultures. Shamanism is our roots wherever we live. A shaman knows that all things are alive and ‘walks with one foot in the everyday world and one foot in the spirit world’. Shamans are intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds. Shamans are intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds. Antonia Ruhl was trained in the shamanic tradition when she was initiated as a tribal medicine woman by the medicine man (“Paje”) of the Amazonian Kayapo tribe. Shamans often use instruments to induce shamanic trance states. The reason for using musical instruments to induce trance states lies in the physiology of the human awareness and brain functions. A monotonous drumming beat or rattling changes the brainwave patterns to dreamlike patterns in the alpha region. The sounds of the instrument also drown out disturbing noises.
Drumming circles are used to go on a soul journey. The intention of the musician is important.The intent of the journey should be clear before beginning the journey. For example, “I will find my power animal”. The musician’s intention is being carried by the playing of the instrument and should not be underestimated. A returning signal at the end of the session is signalling the end of the journey, and if it is used regularly it programs the subconsciousnessto return to the signal. The power animal can take you to any location in your spirit world and to other spirits for special tasks. It is possible to have more than one power animal. The animals have special talents, according to their nature. Dr. Antonia Ruhl thinks of her drumming workshops as a rite of passage, an initiation into a higher level of consciousness. A way to break free from old paradigms and conditioned thought patterns and access the power of not only our personal unconscious but the collective unconscious described by Carl Jung. Dr. Antonia believes that creative masterpieces and even major breakthroughs in scientific thinking that are often thought of as the work of genius are the result of accessing the collective unconscious, the source of creativity and deep insight that is available to all if we just know how to open the inner gateway. Shamans have long known about the ability of rhythmic music to induce altered states of consciousness which provide us with access to a greater power.
